You have no doubt heard about people practicing daily meditation.
Personally, I would have a hard time sitting on a pillow for 20 or 30 minutes once or twice a day. I am not really good at emptying my mind either. I do, however know that meditation brings great peace and serenity to those who have a regular meditation practice. For those of you who can’t see yourself doing the sitting and mind emptying thing, I propose another practice that I think is equally effective and perhaps even more exciting and rewarding.
Try a daily reflection practice. Just 10 or 20 minutes per day. You can even do it while lying in bed before you get up in the morning or before you fall asleep at night.
Start by reflecting on all the things you have to be grateful for in your life;
those you are close to who are there for you, special people in your life with whom you had a great relationship that have now passed on, your faithful pets, past and present. Appreciate where you live, the country you live in, your health, your wonderful, capable mind and spirit. Contemplate all the potential you have to create whatever you desire in your life. Really appreciate all that you have, have had and will have. This puts you in a mental state that is inspired, energetic and excited but ironically at the same time peaceful, worry free and confident that all things will work out.
From this energetic state (of high vibration if you subscribe to that),
let your mind start daydreaming about specific goals, plans, events. Think about your life’s work, your soul’s purpose, what would make your heart sing. Learn to tap into your own intuition, your higher self, to guide you into the possibilities and projects that truly inspire and exhilarate. Develop clear images, in full colour and detail. Visualize the path of how you will bring your dreams into reality. What do you need to learn? Who do you need to talk to? What resources do you need, and where do you find them?
I guarantee you that spending time reflecting on your dreams and test driving them in your mind will set you up for excitement and energy the whole day. You will automatically pick up on clues and coincidences that set you on the path to your dreams. You will have the confidence to follow through on these prompts.
At night, you will have the peaceful expectation of good things to come. This will allow you to fall asleep and continue the scheming while you’re dreaming. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll have new ideas to reflect on.
Try this reflection practice twice a day for two weeks. I guarantee you will break out of any rut you may be in and set yourself off in some new and exciting directions.

When the furnace is turned on in your home and your workplace, the humidity in the air is drastically reduced. and your skin can feel drier and often more irritated. It doesn’t matter whether you burn oil, wood, pellets, propane or natural gas, the air is always drier. Have you ever noticed that if you are lucky enough to escape to the Caribbean in the winter, it takes about one day for all the dryness to leave your face, your hands, the rest of your skin and your hair? A humidifier in your home is a great option.
To protect your skin over the winter, here are a few tips that can help make your skin softer and more comfortable.
Cleanse less and use milder products.
You may need to stop cleansing as often and switch to a milder, non detergent based cleanser. You may also need to use a stronger moisturizer to protect your skin from cracking and peeling. Most night creams are oil based, and you may want to consider using them during the day as well.
Protect yourself before you go outside
When outside during the winter, it is important to apply a protective layer of moisturizer to ward off the effects of cold and wind.
Don’t forget to top off with sunscreen, especially if you are outside in the sunshine where snow can reflect UV rays just as water does in the summer.
Care of your Hands and Feet
You will certainly be aware that your hands and your feet are much more dry and scaly. Try using a pumice stone on the dry skin of your feet when you come out of the bath or shower, and then apply a moisturizing barrier cream. Some suggestions are Uremol or lac-Hydrin that can be bought over the counter in pharmacies. Uremol contains urea, a moisturizer naturally present in the skin but reduced in dry skin conditions. Skin becomes smooth & supple. Lac-hydrin contains lactic acid, which is very hydrating to the skin. It can be used anywhere on the body. If you have deep, painful cracks in your feet, consider using Nexcare Skin Crack Care, made by 3M, which is a serum you can paint over your painful cracks. It contains Vitamin C, E and Tea Tree Oil. It forms a water resistant seal which protects and soothes.
Care for the skin on your body
While the Lac-Hydrin and Uremol can be great on your hands, feet and the rest of the skin on your body, you may also want to try Glaxal Base which is also available at the pharmacy. This is the base cream that the pharmacists use to make up hydrocortisone cream. It is very gentle, and helps to form a barrier on your skin to prevent water loss. It is most effective if you apply these lotions to your skin immediately after bathing to lock in the moisture.
Medical Grade SOS
You may want to invest in some more potent and medical grade products for facial skin, to keep it healthy and glowing in the winter months. Check out our Medique Multivitamin Enriched Cream, which contains vitamins A, D and E, pantethol and Riboflavin. It will protect your skin from becoming dry and rough. The Medique Face Lotion helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It contains the 5 naturally occuring fruit acids including glycolic, tartaric, citric, malic and lactic, and also includes B hydroxy acid, which is salicylic acid that dissolves sebum and keeps the pores clean and minimized in appearance. I often tell clients to use a little bit of the Medique Lotion on a clean washcloth as a cleanser to remove makeup and dirt, and then apply fresh moisturizer to the face and neck while thse skin is still moist to lock in the humidity. If you do prefer a more gentle cleanser, the Vivier Hexamer Cleanser is mild, hypo allergenic and less likely to dry out your skin.
If your skin feels dry, dull and lifeless, think about a chemical peel to gently remove the waxy keratin layer that can build up on your skin. We will discuss the features and benefits of the various peels in our next blog post.
Leave a comment and let us know what works for you to keep your skin from feeling to dry over the winter!

Our bodies and minds are very tuned into the diurnal rhythms of the day – we function programmed closely to the rise and fall of the sun. When the days get shorter, our brain neurotransmitters may be affected, in effect giving us less “joy juice”. Going to work and coming home in the dark both ways can make you feel flat and like you have less “yippy skip”.
What can you do to improve your energy and mood if you suspect you suffer from S.A.D.? Here are a few tips to help you put a little skip back in your step this winter.
The sun is key to helping with S.A.D. Move your desk closer to a window, go outside and walk on your lunch break or make a point to get outside and ski or skate on your day off. Try to get yourself into the sunlight as much and as often as possible.
Studies have shows that regular exercise can help improve mood and energy for everyone, whether they are affected by S.A.D. or not.
Combine your extra sunlight time with some movement (indoors or outdoors) and you’ll be well on your way to improving some of the symptoms of S.A.D. We have great trails for snowshoeing and cross country skiing if you want to come for some time out by the river.
Try to stay to a regular sleep-wake cycle. Going to bed on time and getting up at the same time each day lines your body and mind up to what sun there is to be had.
Don’t forget your vitamin D. You may want to increase your intake of Vitamin D to 1000 or 2000 IUs (international units) during the winter because your skin’s ability to manufacture vitamin D drops down in the winter months.
If your days seem darker and darker in spite of the above measures, you may wish to invest in a S.A.D. light (full spectrum white light) that can help your psyche feel like its getting the light it needs. Spending 15-20 minutes per day under such a light may give you a boost.
If you continue to really have a hard time coping, consider seeing your family doctor to discuss a trial of medication that may improve your brain chemistry and allow you to enjoy the winter months.
Do you find yourself suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder? Leave a comment and let us know what you find works for you!
If you’re looking for a great winter activity, consider joining us for our snowshoeing training workshop that runs through January.
Once the Christmas decorations are placed back in their boxes, the pine needles have been all vacuumed up, and you have once again rearranged all the furniture, you are ready for take-off to 2015.
Christmas can be one of the hardest times of year to stay on top of healthy eating. With all the parties and special meals, it’s easy to let things go “until the new year” but that can set you back from all the hard work you have been doing.
Today we’re sharing a few tips to stay on top of things over the holidays so that you can still enjoy the amazing food and stay healthy.
Are you eating gluten free or dairy free? Is there a yearly dinner that you know will be your undoing?
Let people know that you’re trying to eat a certain way and ask if there can be one gluten-free or vegan dish (or offer to bring it yourself). That way you know that there will be things you’ll feel better about eating and everyone will be aware that you’re making efforts to eat healthy and they can support you.
Be aware of sweets and sugar
The temptations for sweets and high calorie goodies are many over the holidays. There’s no need to restrict yourself from having a few treats but try to limit yourself. Decide ahead of time how much you will allow yourself, and don’t go over! Eat every morsel mindfully, really enjoying it, rather than scarfing down a whole plate without thinking while you catch up with friends and family.
By having a plan ahead of time you can still enjoy some sweets without accidentally over- indulging. Keep in mind the calorie density of foods and having a good sense of your overall intake. Try to fill up instead with healthy veggies and salads (mind the high fat, high sugar dips though!) Be aware that alcohol is treated like sugar by your metabolism. Not only do a few drinks add empty calories, becoming disinhibited by too much alcohol can make you throw your good sense to the wind and pack in the goodies way more than you intended.
Enjoy the foods you love but try to be aware of your portion sizes. Try taking a smaller plate to trick your brain into thinking you have as much as usual. A full dessert plate instead of a full dinner plate can make a significant difference in the amount of food you’re having.
Another trick is to simply decide to take a smaller amount of everything you usually eat. Take 2/3 or ¾ the serving size of what you are used to taking of each dish. That way you aren’t missing out on any of your favourite tastes, but you won’t end the meal with that overstuffed and bloated feeling.
Don’t take a holiday from your regular eating just because it’s the holidays. You work hard all year long to establish good and healthy eating practices, Try to stick with the program so you don’t backslide. If you have overindulged, don’t forget the gym is open 8 to 4 on Boxing Day! If you really want to kickstart your weight loss program in the New Year, check out what the Ideal Protein Program can do for you, or make an appointment with April, our nutrition consultant.
Happy, Healthy Holidays!
