Restylane:
Restylane is a naturally occurring gel
substance called hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a component in
subcutaneous tissues and maintains
hydration and plumpness of the skin. The
quantities in the skin decrease as we
mature. Restylane is injected just under
the skin to restore fullness and reduce
the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It
is used cosmetically to add volume to
the lips and recontour the mouth. It can
be used to soften circles under the eyes
and to lift the outer edges of the
eyebrows, giving a more awake
appearance.
Perlane is the same hyaluronic acid
substance, but in larger particles, and
it is used for correction of deeper
lines and furrows. It is especially
effective for softening the nasolabial
folds (the lines extending from the
corners of the nose to the corners of
the mouth). Typically the product gives
results that last six to nine months
after injection. The effect gradually
wears off as the substance is broken
down by natural mechanisms of the body.
Repeated injections can maintain the
desired effect.
Local anesthetics may be administered
prior to the injections to make the
procedure more comfortable. There may be some
redness and/or bruising for several days
after the injection, but this is usually
minimal and can be covered by makeup.
Injections into the lips can cause
swelling lasting several days. Bruising
can be minimized by avoiding aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories,
vitamin E and alcohol for several days
prior to the treatment. |
