Botox:
Botox has been safely used for more than
twenty years in clinical and cosmetic
medicine. Botox is injected into
selected muscles and works by inducing
temporary relaxing of these muscles. It
does not affect sensation. Botox is used
cosmetically to soften dynamic wrinkling
of the skin; i.e. those wrinkles caused
by muscle action. The common areas
treated by Botox are the frown lines
between the eyebrows, the furrows in the
forehead, "crow's feet" around the eyes
and lines in the upper lip. The onset of
action is three to fourteen days after
injection. The effect of Botox may last
only three to four months and then
further injections will be needed to
maintain the effect. (Subsequent
treatments may last longer as the
affected muscles atrophy from disuse.)
Rarely there may be mild discomfort or
bruising at the injection sites. Persons with neuromuscular disease such
as myasthenia gravis are not candidate for Botox injections. |
